Signets & Cyphers
Signet Ring Specialists
Our Gemstone Signet Rings are exquisite and unrivalled.
Available in classic oval shape or stylish cushion our beautifully shaped gold rings can be set with a choice of gemstones. Whilst we recommend our black onyx, bloodstone and cornelian/carnelian gemstones as the strongest and best for engraving we can also offer lapis lazuli, blue/grey sardonyx, and red sardonyx.
We can also set rings with other gemstones like garnet, abalone and other precious stones. Like all our rings, they are tailor made to order so we can discuss your requirements and come up with something to suit your tastes.
Example of a Bloodstone Signet ring engraved with a Lion Rampant. Showing a few red flecks in the stone.
Here is a small portfolio of our work showing most of the variations of Gemstone Signet Ring you can have. 9 and 18 carat yellow gold is most popular. We can also make them in Rose Gold, White Gold and Silver.
Bloodstone varies in colour from dark green with red flecks to dark green- brown (almost black) with red flecks. This example is a regal looking green with red flecks and has been engraved with a coat of arms.
This oval blue sardonyx gemstone ring looks classic yet contemporary. This stone has two strata; a light-grey blue and a deeper black-blue. The engraver cuts through the top light blue strata to expose the darker stone to dramatic dimensional effect.
S&C Gemstone signets have slightly wider shoulders than the solid gold or precious metal equivalent. They are still generous to the eye but feel lighter due to the gemstone setting replacing the solid gold head. S&C gemstone rings have a unique ‘setting’ for the stone which secures the stone firmly and makes it sit slightly proud and raised from the head with a gentle surround sloping back to the shoulders. Cornelian is a very stable gemstone to engrave allowing a fine engraving in the lovely cherry-terracotta stone; making a real objet d’art.
We can also engrave any sort of monogram on a gemstone signet. The cushion gemstones look very substantial as they have wider shoulders and look fabulous – showing off the stone. They also allow more space for an elaborate design. The cushion gemstone ring is lighter in weight than the solid gold cushion version as the thick gold head is replaced by the lighter gemstone.
S&C Gemstone signets can be set with many different stones. This example has been set with the ever popular Lapis Lazuli which looks beautiful (but is more difficult to engrave than other gemstones). It is tantalisingly unpredictable and can look slightly grainy in the engraved area. Nevertheless they look stunning and very contemporary and mostly make very good seals. The blue is often speckled with gold dots occurring naturally in the stone.
Here is an example of an 18 carat gold cushion gemstone ring set with cornelian. You can see our finely finished ‘setting’ for the stone which secures the stone firmly and makes it sit slightly proud from the head with a gentle surround, sloping back to the shoulders.
A beautiful example of a red sardonyx signet ring, which consist of two different coloured strata of stone. We engrave through the top strata to reveal the colour underneath which makes a beautiful two-tone, three dimensional effect.
Here is an image of a rose gold cushion ring taken prior to engraving. You can see the red flecks in the dark bloodstone which compliments the rose gold beautifully. Bloodstones vary in colour from dark green to almost black.
The cushion gemstone set in this ring is a blue sardonyx. This stone has two strata; a light-grey blue and a deeper black-blue. The engraver cuts through the top light blue strata to expose the darker stone to dramatic dimensional effect.
Gemstone engraving is an extremely difficult and precise art and can be quite challenging for the artist to engrave. Like all our engraving it is carried out by hand in the time honoured way. There are very few gemstone engravers left anymore who have the skill and patience to engrave on gemstone and it has to be said that gemstones are less predictable than gold to engrave.
Rest assured, our gemstone engraver is probably the finest in the world and his work is astonishing to behold. The unpredictable nature of gemstone work means that these rings can take a little longer to produce but we can assure that the wait is well worth it.
Our gemstone rings are handmade by our unique cast process and shaped to our exacting specifications. Our special settings ensure lifelong security of the stone. The rings come open back as standard but can be ‘back-filled’ as an extra. They are available in hallmarked yellow, rose and white gold as well as silver.
Example of a Cornelian Signet ring seal engraved with a wild boar family crest. (NB in the USA Cornelian is referred to a Carnelian but it is the same stone.)
Our Gemstone rings are a beautiful rounded shape and are individually sized to suit you perfectly. We can offer a choice of yellow, white and rose gold as well as silver. However please contact us so we can recommend the best ring for you.
Gemstone rings are supplied in standard weight only. By nature gemstone rings are lighter than solid gold rings as there is less gold and the stone set in the rings head is lighter than gold. All gold is hallmarked at the London Assay office.
Available in: Bloodstone, Cornelian, Onyx, Lapis Lazuli, Sardonyx
Please note that our gemstone rings have open backed settings as standard as it allows light to show through the gemstone. It is possible to have the ring back-filled if you prefer. Please contact us for a quote.
